Fleming, Ian
(1908-1964),
British
novelist.
Born in
London, he
was educated
at Eton and
at Sandhurst,
which he
left after a
year to
study
languages in
Munich and
Geneva.
Brother of
the travel
writer Peter
Fleming, he
was a
correspondent
for Reuters
in Moscow
(1929-1933),
and then
worked in
finance in
London until
the outbreak
of World War
II, when he
became
personal
assistant to
the Director
of Naval
Intelligence.
After the
war he was
foreign
manager of
The
Sunday
Times,
until
settling in
Jamaica. He
is best
remembered
for the
creation of
James Bond,
“007”, the
libidinous,
irreverent
British
secret
service
agent who
appears in
12
sophisticated
adventure
novels by
Fleming,
including
Casino
Royale
(1953),
From Russia
with Love
(1957),
Dr No
(1958),
Goldfinger
(1959),
Thunderball
(1961), and
The Man
with the
Golden Gun
(1965).
Commander
Bond has
appeared in
a large
number of
successful
films, and,
like
Sherlock
Holmes, has
become an
archetypal
figure whose
exploits
have far
outstripped
the
imaginings
of his
creator.
